Drew Barrymore's Pasta

On a recent episode of Ellen, Drew Barrymore showed us how to make a pasta dish that she invented at home herself. It is a tomato based pasta that uses "Harissa" - a Tunisian hot chili paste made out of a mix of peppers, spices, herbs and oil. I am quite into spicy food so I thought I would give it a try.

The paste is very earthy and deceivingly spicy. Coming out of the tube it looks like harmless tomato paste but I tried a little bit and I was on fire. So please do not put in too much if you don't like spicy food. You can substitute it with tomato paste.

Prep time: 10 mins

Cook time: 20 mins

Makes 4 servings

3-4 tablespoons olive oil
350g fusilli
400g cherry tomatoes (halved)
2-3 cloves of garlic (sliced)
1 teaspoon of black pepper
1/2 cup fresh basil (shredded)
1 tablespoon dried chives
1 tablespoon dried parsley
2 teaspoons onion salt
1 tablespoon Harissa

1. Cook pasta of choice according to package directions. Add olive oil to a pan over medium heat and fry garlic until brown.
2. Lower the heat and add the cherry tomatoes (do take a step back because the oil might splash a bit). Let them saute for 5 mins then add chives, parsley and onion salt.
3. Add fresh basil to the pan every 5 mins.
4. Add black pepper to taste and simmer another 5 mins, then add a tablespoon of the Harissa paste. Cook another 5 mins.
5. Drain and add cooked pasta to sauce, mix well and serve.
